The Sprit of the 'Nineties (1940)

Labor Jubilee The Winning Song

Mr. Frank Ryland, of Bondi, has won the A.L.P. Jubilee competition for original words set to a popular tune.
Entries were received from all parts of the State. The winner in his song appeals to Labor supporters to maintain
the spirit of the 'nineties, when the Labor Party was born during the great maritime strike.

He also stresses the worth of unity in achieving Labor's objective. The song will be sung at Labor's Golden Jubilee
celebrations at the Assembly Hall, Margaret Street, city, next Monday night.

Here it is;

The Spirit of the 'Nineties (1940)
(To the tune of The Long Long Trail.)

Chorus:

Fifty years of sternest struggle
Has brought us almost to our goal.
Pioneers who bested failure
Pledged to Labor's role.
So as we march 'neath proudest banners
Towards a world where Labor's free ;
Keep the Spirit of the 'Nineties
Our most cherished memory.

Verse:

Labor's fight is nearly over,
Man will soon be free.
So let us celebrate with fervor
Labor's Jubilee.
Let us close our ranks in union,
Pledged to liberty.
One watchword over all the world-
SOLIDARITY.

Chorus:

Fifty years of sternest struggle
Has brought us almost to our goal,
Pioneers who bested failure
Pledged to Labor's role.
So let us march beneath our banners
Towards a world where Labor's free,
In the Spirit of the 'Nineties,
Celebrating our Jubilee.
