The Heights of Illawarra (1941)
(By L. A. Coplan, B.Sc.)

We'll sing a song of Illawarra Heights;
The hills and bushes we love so well,
In glorious sunshine and moonlight nights.
Their rocks are hard, to nature true,
Spring, Summer and Winter, too,
The morning sun and nightly dew,
The delightful heights of Illlawarra !

Nature's gift is Australian's wealth,
And the pride of the South Coast folk,
Nature's art gives to man his health,
All dwellers, happy are made,
While resting in the peaceful shade,
Love for the heights will ne'er fade,
The glorious hills of Illawarra !

As we sat on the mountain top,
In ecstasy and admiration,
We drank the freshness, every drop ;
We saw the miners come and go
From toil on surface and below,
We marveled and we wondered how
They create the wealth of Illawarra.

As we gazed on the azure sky,
The birds were singing nature's praises,
Then we asked the reason why?
The miners grow weak and old,
With so little of their hard-earned gold,
While there is so much, we are told.
In the mines of Illawarra.

"The earth is mine saith the Lord,"
Its fruit is for humanity,
That Is not an idle word,
And every man shall have his share
Of wealth and leisure, to compare
With man's creation, which is fair,
Of of the wealth of Illawarra.
