Ode in doleful minor (1894)

To be sung at the opening Cabinet meeting.

Is it stand or is it fall--
Triumph's crown or failure's pall ?
In or out, or up or down,
Wreathing smile or grumpy frown?
Shall we lose or shall we win
In the Ministerial spin ?

Some there are who wish us well,
Some would like to sound our knell,
Some will mock us in our need--
Baste the Cook and break the Reid.
Shall we, all our troubles past,
Safely swim on top at last ?

These are doubts that break our rest--
Poisoned thorns within the nest ;
These are questions that obtrude--
Phantoms on our solitude.
Who will solve the gnawing doubt--
Up or down, or in or out?
