Back to Index More about Sound and Streaming
![]() High quality sound is now easily prepared for web pages. Here are examples using the most popular plug-ins, RealAudio and Shockwave. You need to download the appropriate plug-in and set up your browser to make use of it. Many radio stations across the globe are now creating web sites that allow you to listen to their station in real time, wherever you happen to log in! The sound is compressed and then sent down in a continuous stream so you dont have to wait for a large file to download. The rate of streaming can be tailored for modems for instance for 14.4 and for 28.8 as well as for high speed connections. The compression turns huge sound files into much smaller files, a compression ratio of greater than 100 times being possible. Using such compression you should be able to get something like 200 hours worth of sound on one CD. Over one week of sound!!! Just imagine the language teaching or music resource possibilities.
