A Song of Summer Time (1939)

Sing a song of summertime
Where the water whirls
Sing a song of happiness
Gaiety and girls,
Sing a song of summer nights
Moon high in the sky
Murmur of a gentle breeze
Or romantic sigh
Gone is winter's gloomy touch
And its storm clouds drear
Let's wake up and live again
Summertime is here !

Moths have had a rare old feast
From bathers stored from view
But that is not a tragedy
There are fashions new,
Gone are grandma's neck-to-knee
Two-piece styles abound,
If you'd see form's poetry,
Brother, look around !

Everything that runs on wheels
Is good this time of year
All roads lead unto the beach
Summertime is here !

By the river or the sea
Summer's joys await
Nature's in her sweetest mood
Happy and elate,
Let's forget the shadows grim
As our shorts we don
What did Mr. Menzies say?
"We must carry on!"
Car and dinghy, yacht and launch
Add to our good cheer
Hail the God-sent open air
Summertime is here !
