The Poacher (1981) On quiet starless nights,
he poached in mossy Devon woods,
where trespassers were transported,
tethered in rags
of government issue,
to follow the white-capped wake
of Cook's Endeavour,
beneath the glittering broad arrow
of the dark sky's Southern Cross. He limped, hobble-chained
among yoked oxen teams,
to build mountain roads
and stone bridges
from dusty bush tracks
and flooded mulga scrub,
leg-ironed like a poached rabbit,
fettered in the shivering autumn mist
of a distant leafless forest. GEOFFREY PAVEY Notes From the ACT Newspaper The Canberra Times 25 Apr 1981 p. 13.
