A Droving Song (1930) Somewhere in the storehouse of memory I found this old droving song:- Can't you hear the clink o' gear?
'Tis your lad come back, my dear,
Coming nearer, nearer, near,
On the old stock road. They have brought them through, as the drovers do,
From the drought-struck Queensland side;
They ha' punched them along to a driving song,
On the weary, weary ride. Wi' the bit-bars ringing
Music for their singing,
On the old stock road. They ha' battled the downs, and the outback towns,
They have heard their cheery call,
As they struggled through as Australians do,
Through the desert an' drought an' all
Till you hear the clink of gear, When your lad comes back, my dear,
Coming nearer, nearer, near,
On the old stock road. Notes From the South Australian Newspaper The Chronicle 3 Apr 1930 p. 66.
