Subsidy Pie (1943) Sir,- Sing a song of threepence
Politicians cry;
All the lovely promises
Done up in a pie. When the pie was opened.
What did the "cocky" see ?
Everyone had got a cut,
Everyone but He. The armchair expert at his deck,
Counting up his money :
The big official packs his bag.
To go to climate sunny. The farm-hand's on vacation,
Drawing his full pay ;
The "cocky" and his family
Must work from break of day. Sing a song of experts,
Figures fat and fine,
When all the rest have got a cut,
The "cocky's" out of line. Well, 'Clarrie' says the pie is good,
And we'll get lots of money,
Now isn't that a fairy tale,
And doesn't it sound funny ? "Jingle Jill," The Milkmaid. Notes From the NSW Newspaper The Northern Star 28 Jun 1943 p. 2. A World War 2 song reflecting the common attitude towards politicians and the "big end of town."
