Hurrah ! Home Rule, hurrah ! (1886)
SCOTLAND, SONG FOR THE ELECTION OF 1886.
We take the following stirring song of the time from the ABERDEEN FREE PRESS:-
HURRAH ! HOME RULE, HURRAH ! Down, Tories, down !
Compatriots all arise !
The Irish flag of liberty
Again salutes the skies ! Chorus--
Hurrah ! Home Rule, hurrah !
We hail thee heart in hand ;
Thy reign peace, love, and. happiness
Shall spread, o'er all the land ! Down, cravens, down !
Thy coward fears restrain ;
Who trusts the honest Irish heart
Shall never trust in vain !
Hurrah! Home Rule, etc., Down, doubters, down !
Have faith in God and man !
"Do justice though the heavens should fall !"
There's wisdom in the plan ! Hurrah, Home Rule, etc.
Down, Salisbury, down !
Your Tory "twenty, years"
Would end in seas of human blood,
And lakes of burning tears ! Hurrah, Home Rule, etc.
Down, tyrants, down !
God save-our gracious Queen !
She'll give the Irish nation-life,
Home Rule in College Green.
"Hurrah, Home Rule, etc.
Down, Cecil, down !
On, on, bold Gladstone, on !
We'll follow thee to, victory,
And bless, thee when it's won,
Hurrah, Home Rule, hurrah, etc. Liverpool, 1886. Notes From the Sydney Journal The Freeman's Journal 28 Aug 1886 p. 6.
