Head-Stockman (1954)

When you hear talk of stations
It's the manager that counts,
The stockmen, cook and yard-builders
Are merely no accounts.
But when you're working on a station
He's just a rubber stamp
For the man who rules the station
Is the man who runs the camp.

The manager's the office front,
He keeps the shine outside,
But the man who keep it moving
Is on the underside.
He knows where all the cattle run
In dry weather and damp,
For the man who runs the station
Is the man who runs the

He knows the country inside out
The stockmen and their ways,
He knows the brumby bullocks
And where the mickies graze.
He knows which neighbours he can trust
And which one is a scamp.
For the man who rules the station
Is the man who runs the camp.

You can get the smartest stockman
And a manager of class
The cook and jackeroos may be
As bright and bold as brass.
But when it comes to running musters
Why all they do is vamp,
For the man who makes the station
Is the man who runs the camp
