The Song of the Spade (1930) COME, comrades, a song to the steel that is strong,
And the edge that is burnished and bright;
A song to the blade that is cunningly made,
As it flashes and gleams in the light!
Loud let us sing to the weapons of spring,
Shovels and pitchforks and that sort of thing,
With a ho for the hoe and a heigh for the spade,
Here's to the weapons for gardeners made! Come, comrades, your cheers for the scythe and the shears,
And the lawn mowers rattling song!
The shovel and rake and the string and the stake,
And the wheelbarrow sturdy and strong!
The trowel for seeds, and the sickle for weeds,
And everything else that a gardener needs,
With a ho for the hoe and a heigh for the spade,
Here's to the weapons for gardeners made! NotesFrom the NSW Newspaper the World's News 23 Jul 1930 p. 30.
