The Labourer On Strike (1909)

Oh, why has fate picked him
To bear such a strain ?
That poor labour victim
They're at him again !
They've nagged him. and ragged-him,
And made him feel cross,
And now he is given the Newcastle toss.
No felon in gaol or No pirate at sea,
Was ever made quail more acutely than he ;
They've knocked him about till he's blue and he's black,
And now they're intent on breaking his back.
This strike is a twister !
His future 'twill spoil ;
It's worse than a blister.
Yea, worse than a boil.
His wife must starve, and his children must pine,
No better, on strike than at work in the mine.
The capitalist-botchers
Hope labour to slay ;
The labourer-watches,
And waits for "his day."
If a word of advice all the trouble can stop,
It is this : Let them keep "Hague and Mason on top."
